Why do I forget everything I study?

Four colours, neat summaries, hours at the desk. Then the quiz starts and it is gone. Here is why, and a three minute fix.

A notebook full of neat colour coded notes and four pastel highlighters beside a biology quiz sheet with every answer line still blank.

Blank on Friday

Jess studies anatomy online. Two hundred slides a week, a quiz every Friday, no notes allowed. Every evening she copies each slide in four colours and highlights the key words.

On Friday the nerves of the arm come up. She wrote them out three times. Nothing.

Everything Jess did put the facts in. Nothing she did practised pulling them out, and the quiz only asks for that. With the slide in front of you it all feels familiar, and familiar is not the same as remembered.

Most study time goes on putting it in. The marks come from getting it out.

So why does closing the book feel so bad? Because you hit blanks, and a blank feels like failing. It is the opposite. Reaching for a fact is what locks it in. Re-reading skips that effort, which is why it feels easy and fades fast.

The blank is the rep.

The three minute fix

One chunk, book closed, then check. That is the whole method.

  1. 1Read one chunkone slide or half a page
  2. 2Close itface down, out of reach
  3. 3Say it allout loud or scribbled, 3 minutes
  4. 4Open, checkcircle what you missed
  5. Circled bits go first tomorrow
Write your score at the top: 4 of 10 tonight. Beat it tomorrow.

You do not have to throw out your notes. Keep your pens and add one check to what you already do.

What do you do now?

Same habit, one extra step. The step is where the learning is.

If you have ADHD, pretty notes give a reward right now, so recall has to as well. Keep rounds tiny, say answers out loud or walk while you do it, and keep a score to beat.

Plan2Ace

A shut book and a pen are enough. Plan2Ace does the asking for you.

An exam practice question on invertible matrices, with a countdown timer and a box to think out loud before answering.
Asked first, nothing to peek at
The flashcards screen with one card due for review, about one minute.
Missed cards come back when due

Exam practice quizzes you with nothing to look at, then Ace teaches through the gaps. Flashcards come back when they are due, so the missed ones return first.

Two more questions

Does highlighting help you remember?

Not much on its own. It works better after a recall try: cover the page, say what you remember, then highlight only what you missed.

How often should I go over it again?

Try the missed bits again tomorrow, then in a few days, then next week. Each gap gets a little longer as it sticks.

Got three minutes?

Pick one slide from today. Close it. Say what you know. Or let Plan2Ace ask. Free to start.
